The Sion Sono

  • Dir: Oshima Arata

  • Japan, 2016, 97minmins

“I think formality is overrated in Japan.” So says Sono Sion at the opening of Oshima Arata’s (son of the legendary director Oshima Nagisa) documentary on the maverick director, whose outrageous blood-and-gore films include Love Exposure (2008) and Suicide Club (2001). Filmmaker, writer, poet, painter, composer – the creative life of the insanely prolific Sono (five films in 2015) is all laid bare. Alternately confrontational, playful, curious, arrogant, energetic and thoughtful, Sono is revealed through his own words and in interviews with his actors, sister, friends and wife, actress Kagurazaka Megumi. “He was merciless!” she sobs in describing their collaborations. Histrionics galore! A must-see for Sono fans.
