The Conversation

  • Dir: Francis Ford Coppola

  • USA, 1974, 113minmins, DCP

  • Cast: Gene Hackman, John Cazale, Allen Garfield, Harrison Ford

As America reeled in panic and distrust following a decade of violence and scandal that included Watergate, Vietnam and the Kennedy assassination, director Francis Ford Coppola delivered a film of clinical and prescient terror. Gene Hackman stars as Harry Caul, a respected but self-conscious surveillance expert, who begins to suspect his work has put a pair of young lovers in mortal danger. As he obsesses over his audio recordings, Harry’s life begins to unravel in a haze of paranoia possibly of his own imagining. A standout conspiracy thriller of the early 70s, The Conversation was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars closing out to Coppola’s own The Godfather: Part II and won the Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. More than 40 years later, the film remains as relevant as ever, in a post-Snowden era where everyone is equipped to record and broadcast everybody else.
