The Commune

  • Dir: Thomas Vinterberg

  • Denmark/Sweden/The Netherlands, 2016, 111minmins

  • Cast: Ulrich Thomsen, Trine Dyrholm

Erik (Ulrich Thomsen) and Anna (Trine Dyrholm) are a middle-class couple in 1970s Copenhagen who took up the idea of inviting friends and acquaintances to live with them at Erik’s childhood mansion. Their marriage and the ideals of this social experiment are severely tested when Erik falls in love with his 24-year-old student Emma – who soon becomes the house’s latest resident. Thomas Vinterberg taps the fractious energy of his 1998 film The Celebration in this latest film, for which Dyrholm won the 2016 Silver Bear for Best Actress at Berlin.
