RoboCop (Director’s Cut)

  • Dir: Paul Verhoeven

  • USA, 1987, 102minmins

  • Cast: Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Ronny Cox

The soul in the machine. In a dystopian Detroit even more depressed than that real metropolis has become since 1987, evil battles evil with occasional glimpses of ambivalent goodness. The human anchor for the story is Officer Murphy, who is killed early on but reanimated as part of a corporate-sponsored robot to clean up the city – within limits. Only his female partner, Lewis, touches the man trapped in the mechanism, as both must navigate not only the horrific and violent landscape of despair of the drug gangs, but also the cynical evil of corporations and politicians who rule the city. A movie of both prescience and poignancy, whose futuristic visions may have come true but whose human message remains truer.
