Rise of the Machine Girls

  • Dir: Kobayashi Yuki

  • Japan, 2019, 76 minmins, DCP

  • Cast: Tsukimiya Himena, Hanakage Kanon, Kitahara Rie, Sakaguchi Tak

In 2008, The Machine Girl blended grindhouse sensibilities with elaborate special effects to create a cult classic. Director Kobayashi Yuki now revives the series with this highly imaginative reboot. By day, Yoshie and her sister Ami make ends meet by performing idol-style fight shows. At night, Yoshie takes revenge against Dharma, the sinister company that rules this dystopian society, with a machine gun strapped to her right arm. With its tongue firmly in its cheek, this is a bloodsoaked thrill ride that proves no one does exploitation cinema quite like Japan.
