Rivette intended for Noroît as part three in a quartet of films – a love story, a fantasy, an adventure and a musical comedy – that were to “discover a new approach to acting”. Partially informed by both the Jacobean play The Revenger’s Tragedy as well as Fritz Lang’s Moonfleet (1955), this anachronistic, pirate-themed film stars Geraldine Chaplin as Morag, a moon ghost seeking vengeance, and Bernadette Lafont as Giulia, a pantsuit-wearing pirate matriarch and sun spirit who killed Morag’s lover. Having never been theatrically released in France, Noroît is now ready to be re-discovered for the beauty in its “intensely realized reveries” for which “we may remember [movies] afterward like shards of unfathomable dreams” (Jonathan Rosenbaum).
