Man of Iron

  • Dir: Andrzej Wajda

  • Poland, 1981, 153minmins

  • Cast: Jerzy Radziwilowicz, Krystyna Janda, Marian Opania

Wajda’s important sequel to his 1977 film Man of Marble rectifies the story of Stakhanovite bricklayer Mateusz Birkut (Jerzy Radziwilowicz), a man whose downfall from 1950s Stalinist Poland was forcibly made ambiguous by censors in the previous film. Man of Iron explicitly clarifies Birkut’s demise during the 1970 protests, and follows the story of his son Maciej Tomczyk (also played by Radziwilowicz), an activist who instigated the worker strikes at Gdansk Shipyard. Boldly critical of the Polish Communist regime, Man of Iron was released just months before martial law would be imposed in Poland. Labor activist Lech Walesa, the real-life leader of the Solidarity Movement and subject of Wajda’s 2012 biopic, appears as himself in this film.
