  • France/Germany/Belgium, 2016, 130minmins

  • Cast: Isabelle Huppert, Charles Berling, Laurent Lafitte, Anne Consigny

Paul Verhoeven caps off his long, unsettling career by returning to the screen after a 10-year absence with a very different view of rape. Verhoeven here presents a controlling female executive who responds to her assault by covering it up and then turning the tables on the rapist in a powerful pas de deux marked by humor and intelligence. A script, according to the director, that was rejected by many Hollywood stars before finding Isabelle Huppert, leading Verhoeven to his first film in French. And a work that, in turn, became one of the highlights at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Unusual, provocative and exciting fare from a septuagenarian master.
