Anomalisa

  • Dir: Charlie Kaufman, Duke Johnson

  • USA, 2015, 90minmins, DCP

  • Cast: David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh

After penning a string of critically acclaimed screenplays, culminating in an Oscar for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), oddball visionary Charlie Kaufman adapted his stage play into a wholly unique stop-motion animated feature. The film follows Michael Stone, a misanthropic customer service expert wrestling with a growing disconnect between himself and the rest of the world. Arriving in Cincinnati for a seminar, a fleeting encounter with a female fan offers Michael a glimmer of hope, but will he allow himself such happiness? Featuring voice work from David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh – and Tom Noonan as everybody else – Anomalisa draws humor, pathos and humanity from the heartache and mundanity of everyday life, while employing an animated aesthetic the likes of which we have never seen on screen before.
