This Man Must Die

  • Dir: Claude Chabrol

  • France / Italy, 1969, 112 minmins, DCP

  • Cast: Michel Duchaussoy, Caroline Cellier, Jean Yanne

The only film in the “Hélène Cycle” without Stéphane Audran. Turning to the English mystery writer Nicholas Blake (Cecil Day- Lewis), Chabrol continues to construct a disturbing web of hatred and revenge that is also a critical study of class psychology. Charles Thénier’s young son is killed by a reckless driver. Charles relentlessly tracks the female passenger in the car and through her locates the driver, the truly awful Paul, who is hated by his own family. Deciding to execute Paul, though, Charles finds the man always a step ahead.
