The Pink Panther

  • Dir: Blake Edwards

  • USA, 1963, 114 minmins, 35mm

  • Cast: David Niven, Peter Sellers, Robert Wagner, Claudia Cardinale

The“pink panther”is a fabulous gem in the plot – and in cinema history. Owned by an Indian princess (Claudia Cardinale) in exile, this rare diamond sparks a comic invention of a cat-and-mouse game between a gentleman thief known as the Phantom (David Niven) and a bumbling detective. Blake Edwards’s comedy will be forever remembered just for introducing Henry Mancini’s theme music and the iconic “pink panther” cartoon character featured in the film’s title sequence, but its lasting influence really belongs to Inspector Clouseau, whose scene-stealing and largely improvised slapstick comedy served as a showcase for the inimitable talents of the great Peter Sellers.
