The Deer Hunter

  • Dir: Michael Cimino

  • UK/USA, 1978, 183minmins

  • Cast: Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, Christopher Walken

Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for the recently deceased Michael Cimino, The Deer Hunter was one of the first films to tackle – and openly condemn – the Vietnam War, and remains a crowning achievement of the New Hollywood era. Anchored by a powerhouse performance from Robert De Niro at the height of his powers, the film follows the plight of three Pennsylvania steelworkers as they are drafted into combat and endure horrific events, both on the battlefield and back home. Notorious for its nerve-shredding scenes of Russian Roulette and bold anti-war sentiment, The Deer Hunter boasts break-out roles for Meryl Streep and Christopher Walken (who also won an Oscar), as well as the final appearance by the great John Cazale.
