Love & Friendship

  • Dir: Whit Stillman

  • Ireland/The Netherlands/France, 2016, 92minmins

  • Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Chloë Sevigny, Xavier Samuel, Stephen Fry

Whit Stillman, that notoriously careful director who honed his craft with comedies of manners set in Manhattan (Metropolitan , 15th HKIFF) and an American college (Damsels in Distress, 36th HKIFF), joins forces with the wittiest great aunt of English manners, Jane Austen. Tackling her little known posthumous epistolary novel Lady Susan , Stillman and his talented cast – Kate Beckinsale, Chloe Sevigny, Stephen Fry and new faces – splendidly evoke an 18th century panorama when marriage was the hunt of a lifetime for intelligent (albeit sometimes scheming) women, whether mothers, daughters or friends. And although Britain and America were already divided by a revolution (ungrateful children!), an American still proves central to the best of plans.
