Knight of Cups

  • Dir: Terrence Malick

  • USA, 2015, 118minmins

  • Cast: Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Antonio Banderas

Hollywood’s favorite philosopher-poet turns his unique gaze back on Tinseltown itself, following disenchanted screenwriter Rick (Christian Bale) as he wrestles with fame, success and a string of meaningless relationships. Through the hypnotic lens of three-time Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki, Los Angeles and Las Vegas appear as a surreal dreamscape, while characters from tarot cards dissect Malick’s splintered narratives into tales of sexual conquest and romantic failure. Boasting a vast ensemble cast including Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman and Antonio Banderas, Knight of Cups sees Malick finally engage with the community that sired him, with predictably transcendental results.
