Katie Tippel

  • The Netherlands, 1975, 105minmins

  • Cast: Monique van de Ven, Rutger Hauer, Peter Faber

Here, Verhoeven turned to classic if underappreciated proletarian texts: the semi-autobiographical novels about Katje Oldema produced by the realist, sociallydriven early 20th century Dutch-Belgian author Neel Doff. Katie embodies Doff’s wandering origins and suffering: a poor young girl forced into prostitution to feed her family who fights to escape. To do so, she must depend on the patronage on bourgeois men who teach her but also use her. Like Olga in Turkish Delight, an artist seems to offer true love. But will this, too, be snatched away?
