Ingrid Bergman in Her Own Words

  • Dir: Stig Björkman

  • Sweden, 2015, 114minmins

Ingrid Bergman, star of the Hollywood classics Casablanca (1942) and Notorious (1946), was at the peak of her career in 1949 when she left her husband and daughter and began a scandalous love affair with Italian neorealist director Roberto Rossellini, with whom she went on to make several films. “I wanted to leave Hollywood because I thought there was another way of making movies,” the Academy Award-winning Swedish actress, who died in 1982, once said. Stig Bjorkman’s revealing documentary — through Bergman’s own home movies, her letters and diaries, and interviews with her four children, including actress Isabella Rossellini — shows a luminous and deeply thoughtful artist who flouted convention to pursue her passions.
