Gloria

  • Dir: John Cassavetes

  • USA, 1980, 121 minmins, DCP

  • Cast: Gena Rowlands, Buck Henry, Julie Carmen

John Cassavetes, a pioneering architect of American Independent Cinema, directs his wife and long-term muse, Gena Rowlands, in this hardboiled tale of a middle-aged, former gangster’s moll, who becomes the unwitting guardian to a young boy targeted by the New York mob. Rowlands was nominated for an Academy Award for her gritty portrayal of the toughas- nails Gloria, while the film was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. In the decades since, Gloria has inspired numerous imitators, including Luc Besson’s Leon: The Professional (1994), as well as a 1999 remake directed by Sidney Lumet, starring Sharon Stone.
