Desierto

  • Dir: Jonás Cuarón

  • Mexico/France, 2015, 94minmins

  • Cast: Gael García Bernal, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Alondra Hidalgo

Director Jonás Cuarón (son of Alfonso Cuarón and writer of Gravity [2013]) and actor Gael García Bernal bring their art-house pedigree to this heart-pounding thriller about a group of illegal Mexican immigrants making their way on foot over the border into the U.S., where they cross paths with a redneck American vigilante who hunts them down with a high-powered rifle. What follows is a deadly cat-and-mouse game under the searing desert sun that combines poetic cinematography and minimal dialogue with flashes of existential Mexploitation. There’s no mistaking where Cuarón’s sympathies lie in this U.S. presidential election year, with Donald Trump elevating immigration to the No. 1 campaign issue.
