  • Dir: Woody Allen

  • USA, 2016, 96minmins

  • Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell, Blake Lively

Love and loss in a 1930s Hollywood as only Woody Allen can evoke if, after many a European jaunt. Young lovers, starstruck and star-crossed, are wonderfully captured by Jesse Eisenberg, as a naive New Yorker in wonderland and the luminous Kristen Stewart as the actress turned secretary who seeks real life amidst glamour and shadows. Yet, as always in Allen’s worlds, they find themselves caught in a love triangle that tears at both. Meanwhile, Allen lavishes fantastic attention – and fabulous photography – on the evocation of life on both coasts: the Hollywood film business (anchored by a refreshing turn by Steve Carell as a high-powered agent) and the Manhattan nightclub ambience of gangsters, politicians and its own cinematic evocations.
