Beyond a Reasonable Doubt

  • Dir: Fritz Lang

  • USA, 1956, English, 80min, DCP

  • Cast: Dana Andrews, Joan Fontaine, Sidney Blackmer

To make the case against capital punishment, a newspaper publisher conspires with a novelist (Dana Andrews) to falsely implicate the latter as a murder suspect. Their plans for an exposé, however, go fatally awry. Passionately advocated by Jacques Rivette in a famous Cahiers review, Lang’s final American film – pared down to resemble a thought experiment – destabilizes the style and storytelling of classical Hollywood by foregrounding narrative construction and questioning the relationship between truth and representation. Essential viewing in our “post-truth” age of “fake news.”
